Large Vintage Bohemian Cut To Clear Ruby Red Glass Pedestal Vase by Egermann
Very Large Pedestal Vase in Cut to Clear Ruby Red Glass. This lovely piece is in very good condition. The distinctive style of Baroque engravings cut into the surface of the rich red glass through to the clear glass makes this piece clearly recognisable as a piece of'Egermann' glass. Freidrich Egermann developed a unique process in the 1830's of using a special process with chemicals to stain the surface of clear glass into a deep ruby red colour. Up until this time, the only way to create red glass was to put gold into the molten glass to change its colour, an extremely expensive process. His process was such a success that his competitors broke into his factory and stole his secret formulation! Egermann glass is Bohemian in origin, and features traditional baroque style motifs that were hand cut into the surface of the red stained glass, revealing the clear glass beneath. This beautiful vase has birds, a castle and a deer around the rim. The cutting is done with beautiful craftmanship, as seen in the photos. The piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There are some scratches to the underside of the base.
It is a very sizeable piece, making an ideal statement piece for an entryway, sideboard or pedestal. It looks wonderful on its own but would also be amazing full of flowers such as a big bunch of white oriental lilies. It measures 27.3cm tall and 22.3cm in diameter.
The pieces age is unknown, but due to its style I would date it to pre 1950. It could be much older, as I said, Egermann started this process in 1830.
